Hey, hey, hey!
We’ve had a busy day today. Kev and I started our day with a killer workout at F45. Loved it! The rest of the day we’ve been busy watching our daughter perform at an all-day dance competition (seriously all….day….long!) and a basketball game for our 13 year old.
We took the kiddos to lunch at Zupas after the basketball game and between dances….
I ordered the Protein Cobb Salad (1/2 size) and a bowl of the Roasted Veggie and Quinoa Soup.
It was very good, but there wasn’t a lot of quinoa in my soup this time. I was sad. 🙁
Oh, and here’s a pic of my daughter and I after her competition.
I’m still sportin’ my workout clothes and sweatyness because we pretty much ran out the door as soon as we got home from the gym. I had my computer with me so I could work on the blog between dances too. 🙂
Crazy day.
Well, I have a few random things I want to share. First off, this bread…
My cute 9 year old brought this home from Cub Scouts recently. He told me they were doing an experiment so they could see mold grow on the bread. They got the bread wet, rubbed their hands all over it and put it in a bag.
The kicker is…he brought it home about a MONTH ago. AND, it looks pretty much exactly the same as the first day he brought it home. There are no signs of mold whatsoever!
Eeeeee. Yikes.
Isn’t that just weird??? I think it is. It’s crazy the amount of preservatives and crap that’s in so much of the “food” available to us. I’m going to keep the bread in the bag a while longer to see if anything happens. I’ll keep y’all posted. 😉
I’ve also noticed something else recently that I actually think is pretty cool. We bought some trail mix from Costco the other day and I happened to notice something new on the label…
If you look closely at the bottom of the Nutrition Facts, you’ll see that it says, “M&M’s brand milk chocolate candies partially produced with Genetic Engineering.”
I never noticed that before, but I think it’s great that they have to disclose it now. A couple of weeks ago Kev was eating a Mary Jane candy (random, I know!) and I noticed it said “Made with Genetic Engineering” on the label.
My first thought was, “Now why in the world would they want to advertise that!??!” I then realized that maybe they didn’t want to advertise it…maybe they had to “advertise” it now.
I did a little research and quickly realized that is definitely the case and I think it’s great. I love that our society is putting more pressure on companies to own up to all the crap they put in our “food.” I also love that a lot of companies are starting to raise the bar a bit and change the ingredients in their food to make it higher quality.
There’s a lot of power in the media and the internet. Scary, but also cool. Case in point, did y’all hear about #bradswife? Ha ha.
Well, today I also want to share a video I made a couple weeks ago. I decided to video all of the things I ate throughout the day. I didn’t necessarily plan out my meals beforehand, I just ate what I would’ve normally eaten.
I also included the calories and macro counts of the things I ate. It turned out to be a little bit lower calorie day than usual (~1300 calories), but it was fine. I wasn’t overly hungry and just went with the flow.
I usually don’t do a lot of typical food prep…I just eat a lot of the same, simple things quite often. I always have cooked chicken, plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein powder, eggs, egg whites, a stash of protein pancakes, veggies and fruit on hand. It makes it really easy to just quickly throw something together.
Sooooo, here’s my video…
Aaaaaaand, I hope y’all enjoy the rest of your weekend too!

I love that labels are including more info now about what is in food and how it is made.

I agree 100%!

So interesting about the labeling law, although I am conflicted about GMOs. I agree with the idea that GMs should be labeled, but I’m unhappy with the scare tactics the anti-GM groups often resort to, that are not science-based, or even bother to use the terminology correctly. I don’t think scaring people ads to the collective intelligence. And this particular law leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not as transparent as it might seem. I’ll include a link below. GM foods are not “additives.” In the case of the candy you reference, they probably used sugar from GM sugar beets or corn syrup from GM corn. There are a lot of other chemicals added to our foods that I think we should be as or more worried about.
There’s a book I plan to read on the GM debate. I’ll put a link to that below, too. All “food” for thought!
I always learn something new on your blog! 🙂
Some info on the labeling law: http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/07/14/486060866/congress-just-passed-a-gmo-labeling-bill-nobodys-super-happy-about-it
Here’s a Q&A with the author of the book I plan on reading by McKay Jenkins: Food Fight: GMOs and the Future of the American Diet.
BTW, I love this quote: “The question of whether eating a GMO corn chip will cause you cancer is not the right question to ask. The bigger question is what is your relationship to food and the land? It’s much more existential but it’s an important question. We are eating in a way that is profoundly damaging to our land and water and health and now what to do about that is the big question.”

The articles you referenced are interesting! I agree, I’m not a fan of over-hyping anything or the scare tactics that are used out there. I’m still learning a lot about GMOs, but I am always amazed by all the other chemicals and fake crap that are in our “foods!” I’m definitely a fan of labeling and having companies disclose their ingredients!

Oh my gosh, it makes me so sick that “food” these days is so polluted with GMOs and preservatives. Sometimes I complain about how fast our food goes bad in my home and my husbands is quick to remind me that is the price we pay for buying organic. My tune immediately changes, haha! You can’t put a price tag on healthy!

I know! It’s frightening how many chemicals are in so much of the food out there. I’m always reminding my kids that the healthiest foods are the ones that expire quickly!
