Hey everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
We had a great Thanksgiving and I really enjoyed the long weekend. I loved getting a little more sleep and spending time as a family.
We’ve all had a hard time getting back to a “normal schedule” this week though! I’ve been singing this song to my kids every morning…
But instead of singing, “Breaking up is hard to do,” I’ve been singing “Waking up is hard to do!” Ha ha. Very, very true. I’ve been singing it to myself too. 😉

I started my Thanksgiving off running the Human Race 5K Turkey Trot with Kev and my son. I love starting Thanksgiving off with a race! There were 5,600+ runners and it was so much fun!
Here we are on the way to the race…
Just before the race….
And after the race…
I love the energy at races and it was so much fun to run an actual “real” race again! It’s the best! The weather was absolutely perfect; in the 40s. I LOVED IT.
We weren’t super fast, we finished right around 29-30 minutes. We didn’t have an official timing chip, but Kev timed it with an app on his phone. 😉 I must say that I was the “wussiest” of the bunch. I know Kev could have gone a lot faster and my 11 year old son was a ROCK STAR! I was so proud of him. I let Kev and my son run ahead of me at the end. They finished about a minute ahead of me.
It was a hard race for me! I loved it so much and it felt SO GOOD to run, but I was discouraged that a ~30 minute 5K felt so difficult to me!
BUT, being the eternal optimist that I am, I reminded myself that a 5K should always feel hard! You should always give it your ALL and push yourself, whether that be running a 20 minute 5K or a 40 minute 5k! Right now a ~30 minute 5K is my best! As my fitness level improves and my weight decreases, I expect my running to improve as well!
I’m just happy I finished and that I can run races again. Woo hoo!
On a brighter note, I was very happy to see that I was listed as the “Team Captain” on all of our race bibs. Ha ha….
Well, look at that!! I feel so special. I made everyone call me “Cap” all day long. Ya gotta live it up, right?
After the race, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner up at my sister’s house with my parents, siblings and a bunch of my aunts, uncles and cousins. I didn’t take too many pictures though. Boo.
I love my family…
We also decided to have a second Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday night with my brother and his family! We weren’t quite ready to say goodbye to Turkey Dinner for another year, so we decided to relive it. It was great!
My cute nieces made a “special table” for “Girls Only!”
I’m so grateful my daughter has cute girl cousins since she doesn’t have any sisters. 🙁 These cute girls are just like little sisters to her.
And yes, I ate entirely too much food this weekend! It was awesome.
We also made a quick trip to downtown Salt Lake City on Saturday night with the fam. The weather here has been SO MILD and I’ve been loving it, so I decided we needed to head downtown to see the lights while the weather was so nice. BTW, it’s been in the 50s the past several days and it’s supposed to remain in the 50s the rest of this week!
SO DANG AWESOME!
Anyway, we decided to take the train into the city to make the adventure a little more fun. I, of course, embarrassed everyone by taking pictures all night long…
Check out this photo bomber. I told him I was going to share it on all of my social media, so here ya go….
I couldn’t get enough of this little cutie pie, his chubby cheeks and snow hat!
We walked around Temple Square for a bit, but it was so busy (apparently everyone else had the same “good idea” to enjoy the nice weather as well!)
We decided to walk across the street to City Creek Center, the fancy mall that I love so much!
Check out my zombie family. Eeeee….freaky.
We had such a fun evening and I’m so glad we took advantage of the nice weather!
After the Thanksgiving weekend ended, I told myself that the “madness had to end,” meaning that I needed to stop EATING so much flippin’ food.
I realized my October was pretty dang good. I ate SO well, felt lean, thin, energized and just….good.
My November……hmmmm…….
…..not so good. I was pretty much a glutenous pig. It was fun, sort of.
I really find so much more joy, satisfaction and happiness from eating well and living a healthy lifestyle! Eating my favorite crappy food is fun, but the “fun” is so short lived and it leaves me feeling blah, chubby, sluggish and unmotivated.
It is NOT worth it.
Soooo, I’ve decided that I’m going to “kill it” the month of December! I’ve decided that sugar, especially homemade baked goods, is my Kryptonite, so I’m going to steer clear of it! I’m going to try to load up on the veggies and eat as clean as possible.
Lots of veggies and clean eating are always my goal, but I’m going to make a better effort to stay committed! I am going to take Christmas Day and New Years Eve off though.
Oh, and just to recap, I lost ~8 pounds in October and ZERO pounds in November. In fact, there were days I was up a pound or two. Yay me.
Soooo, I intend to lose a few more pounds in December and then I’m going to HIT IT HARD for the New Year! Woo hoo!
Well, that pretty much sums up our weekend in a nutshell. I hope y’all had a fabulous Thanksgiving as well!

Haha! I think I’m going to wake up my kids with that song. They’ll love it, I’m sure. Once they get over yelling at me to get out of their rooms!
I had a hard time being good in November, and December doesn’t look like it’s going to be any easier. I like your clean eating goal. I’m going to adopt that as well.

I hope your kids enjoy that song! Ha. I have to yell at my kids to get moving every morning too!!
I think this time of year is SO HARD to stick with the healthy goals, but we just keep pluggin’ along, right?

So fun that you had 2 Thanksgiving meals!!!
I bet the train ride downtown to see lights was fun – awesome that the weather was nice enough to enjoy being out!!!
Melanie says
I thoroughly enjoyed BOTH of our Thanksgiving dinners! The weather here has been CRAZY awesome, yet so strange. We’re usually buried in snow by now, but we’ve been enjoying 50 degree weather for 2 weeks now!!! Global warming?!?!?

5K races are always hard. How fun to do it with your family.

I loved running the race with Kev and my son. It made it so much more fun!

Gosh, I loved all of those family pictures!! You have such an amazing family and your baby really is the most adorable little boy ever! I laugh because they 5K would have killed me too! I haven’t ran in so long and just running half a block right now would do me in. Running is absolutely the type of exercise that you must consistently train at, or you “lose” it really quickly. Whereas weights or resistance training, I can pick it up like I never took a break! Good for you for getting up and running it, period! 🙂 Glad you had such a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Melanie says
Thanks so much Brandi! I know, running is HAAARRRRDDD! It always takes me forever to build up my speed and endurance, but then it seems to disappear so quickly if I don’t keep at it. Gah!
Deborah says
That’s amazing you ran the 5k already; how nice your hubby and son did it with you!
You say you didn’t lose pounds, but your face looks slimmer to me! Of course we all know the real goal is health, not weight, and you are already so fit in a short time after having the baby.
I MUST wake up my kids with your song tomorrow! I love that you do that, and I love that you shared your idea! It’s priceless. I’m replaying the original video you included to re familiarize myself with the lyrics so I can change the words more effectively!
Melanie says
Thanks so much Deborah! I hope that I’m ever so slowly losing a little weight and getting into better shape, but it seems like it’s taking forever!
Christy says
Congrats on your race! You look amazing and it looked like a great family adventure.
Melanie says
Thanks so much! It was so nice to run a race again, even though it was a slow 5k!

MORE THAN ONE THANKSGIVING IN A WEEK – OMG I AM SO JEALOUS!!!! I am dreaming of my Thanksgiving dinner I was stuffing in my face last week at this time, SAD DAY! 🙁
Melanie says
LOL! I’m missing Thanksgiving dinner too. ‘Til next year…..

It looks like you had a great time on your little adventure with your family. I love going out with my family is so much fun for me. Two thanksgiving sounds amazing!
Melanie says
We had a great time! I love this time of year and I love going on fun little family adventures. 😉

We didn’t even have a turkey dinner this year. It was a nice meal, but ham just isn’t the same and I didn’t host, so no leftovers…
You are making progress – even if the scale isn’t saying you are. You are running again – you’ll be fit in no time.
Melanie says
I love ham, but I agree, there’s nothing like Thanksgiving turkey! I love having leftovers too! I hope I’m slowly, but surely getting back into shape, but MAN it seems to take forever!
scooby101 says
If you can stay that fit after 5 kids I know it’s possible. You’re an inspiration!

Thanks so much!
