Happy Saturday and almost Memorial Day! I hope y’all have fun plans for the weekend.
We’ve been crazy, crazy, crazy lately! I don’t know about all you other moms out there, but don’t you think the end of the school year is insane??? It’s a lot of fun, but I think we’re all ready for SUMMER to begin!!!
I went on a couple field trips with my kid’s classes this week….
I went to the zoo with my kindergartner…
Hogle Zoo is a wonderful zoo and I used to love going there as a kid! One of the only things remaining there from my childhood is this lion drinking fountain….so I had to take a pic!
I also went on a walking field trip with my 2nd graders class to visit some local businesses (Fongo Bongo, IFA and Peterson’s.)
It was a lot of fun and I’m glad I could go! I’m always happy when teachers allow “younger siblings” on field trips because it seems like we always have “younger siblings” kickin’ around here, lol!
My cutie pie 8 year old also earned his Bobcat award at Cub Scouts this week. I had to laugh when I saw these two pictures…
He and I are doing the exact same facial expression!!! I didn’t even know I made that face, lol!!! Now I know. Like mother, like son.
My sister also sent me this random text this week…
A small local company used a picture of ME on their Instagram!??! I think that’s very weird. I’m actually surprised they even used that pic because it’s a little blurry, poor lighting and my (then) 5 year old took the picture! Ha ha. It just doesn’t strike me as a “desirable picture” that someone would want to use for marketing. Bwahahaha!
I’m also not a huge fan of people just taking the liberty to use my pics, especially pictures of me and/or my family. I always put my blog name on all my pics for this exact reason. I’ve had companies contact me to get my permission to use pictures or they will mention me/my blog on the picture and I’m just fine with that. It just feels weird to see myself on a random Instagram feed, apparently promoting a company that I’ve never even heard of. I’ll probably shoot them an email and voice my concerns. Hee hee.
Oh, and in case any of you are wondering, that picture was from a post I did a couple years ago. I was barely pregnant with baby #6 and feeling very very blah. Here’s a link if you’re interested, https://www.happybeinghealthy.com/easy-food-a-killer-upper-body-and-cardio-workout
Anyway, moving on….
If you read my last post, you know that Kev started a healthy diet thing a couple weeks ago and wanted me to do it with him! I’ve kinda sorta been doing it with him, but I haven’t been 100% on board. I’ve really just been focusing on counting my macros and eating a sensible diet. It’s been great. I’ve been loosening up a little on the weekends, but I’m still being mindful. So far, so good. It’s actually just perfect for me right now.
I recently realized that I really needed to kick up my workouts! I’ve been slacking a bit the past few weeks. Ya know, I’m a huge believer in nutrition and healthy eating. I’ve read many times that overall health is really 80% diet and 20% exercise (some claim 90%/10%!) I believe it! I know that the foods we put in our mouths have a very significant and direct impact on our bodies, energy level and overall health. I know that you can’t out-exercise a bad diet!
Soooo, too often I don’t put enough emphasis on the whole workout part of healthy living. I usually eat a pretty healthy diet and I know that if I were more consistent with my workouts, I’d love the results. Soooo, that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do!
I’ve been working out from home a lot lately and I really just don’t love working out from home! It’s certainly not as interesting or motivating as going to the gym or working out with other people. There are also soooo many distractions at home and it’s just too easy for me to put off my workouts or skip them altogether!
However, at this stage in my life it’s just easier for me to workout from home. I’ve been trying to get back to some of my favorite classes at the gym, but it seems like we’ve had a lot of conflicts the past couple weeks that haven’t allowed me to get there! I’m hoping summer will be simpler so I can get to my classes. 🙂
Even though I don’t love working out from home, I HAVE been getting some killer workouts in. I’ve really been loving HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts soooooo much lately. I’ve been integrating it into my runs, especially on the treadmill. Whenever I run on the treadmill, I love to start out with a 5 minute warm up and then I alternate between sprinting (usually 8-9 MPH), walking (4 MPH) and then just easy running for a bit (6-7 MPH.) It’s just perfect for me and keeps me from going crazy.
Kev and I also went on a run this week and made it a “Fartlek run,” which is essentially HIIT training. We ran a normal pace for 3ish minutes, then sprinted for one minute and then walked one minute. It was fun and made the run go by much faster.
I’ve really been enjoying running lately, although my foot has been starting to hurt me a little the past couple weeks. It doesn’t seem to be getting worse (fingers crossed), so I’ve just been stretching/massaging/strengthening the crap outta it in an effort to get it better!
I’ve taken a couple running pics lately that I thought I’d share!
I don’t run with my doggie too often because he’s an emotional runner! He loooooves to run with me, but he’s afraid of everything so sometimes he just decides he’s DONE running. It’s great fun, especially when I’m miles away from home. Soooo, lately I’ve just been taking him on very short runs and he loves it.
I took that pic on the treadmill today. I ended up running 5 miles and working lower body. I usually don’t work lower body on the days that I run, but I decided to do it today! Sooo, I ran 1-2 miles, then I did a bunch of different squats with weights (pulses, static holds too.) Then I ran 1-2 miles and then did a bunch of sumo squat stuff (pulses, static holds, one heel up.) After I finished the 5 miles, I ended with a bunch of lunges (walking lunges, leg up in the back, pulses, etc.) and then did a few moves with the resistance band. It was great and I’m thoroughly worn out.
I’ve been doing some other workouts this week that I thought I’d share. I came up with a fun HIIT workout that I loved. I’m planning on doing it again next week!
I think it’s pretty self explanatory; you just do 6 circuits. You do an exercise for 30 seconds, rest 10 seconds, then move to the next exercise in the circuit. You complete each circuit 3 times and rest one minute between circuits. Oh and if you’re not familiar with any of these moves, you can just Google it and you’ll see a bunch of pictures/videos to help!
I loved this workout! It wasn’t boring at all and was actually kind of fun. I used an interval timer on my phone that I found on You Tube (30 seconds on, 10 seconds rest.) It was perfect. I’m sure there are a bunch of apps out there too.
I also did an awesome upper body workout this week that I loved! I’m planning on doing it next week too! I followed a style that Kev’s friend’s Personal Trainer recommended.
For each move, you do:
- 12 reps (50% max weight)
- 10 reps (60-70% max weight)
- 8 reps (70-80% max weight)
- 6 reps (as heavy as you can!)
- 12 reps (70% max weight)
I chose 3-4 different moves for each muscle group.
Biceps:
- Bicep curls
- Hammer curls
- Lateral bicep curls
Triceps:
- Overhead extensions
- Dumbbell kickbacks
- Dumbbell Skull Crushers
Shoulders:
- Military Press
- Upright Row
- Front Raises
- Lateral Raises
Chest:
- Push Ups (I did 6, 8, 10, 12, 15)
- Flyes
- Dumbbell Chest Press
Back:
- Bent Over Rows
- Reverse Flyes
- Bent Over Wide Rows
That was it! After it was over, I made sure to stretch really well.
I definitely felt these workouts!
I even have a few beautiful pictures to share, lol!
I share these pics to show that workouts do not need to be fancy, sophisticated or complicated. I workout with minimal equipment (I want to get more!) while the kiddos play and get interrupted a zillion times, BUT I git ‘r done! Most of the time, I’m sportin’ a beautiful no make-up, hair thrown on top of the head look too, lol. It’s awesome.
Well, I’m going to wrap this up because I’m hoping to do something fun with the fam tonight! I’m thinking the park and then out to dinner sounds like fun! I hope you all enjoy your weekend! Love you all! xoxo

Be careful, your latest sexy work out photos may be yanked and shared on Instagram – haha! 😉 I honestly would take it as a compliment, I mean, the company believes you to be nice and fit and healthy! Now if there said a lot of negative things about you under your photo, THEN I would be ANGRY!!!! But definitely email them and broach the subject!
Oh and I truly believe it’s: 80% diet, 10% exercise & 10% genetics!!

Ha ha ha ha ha!!! It is a little freaky that people/companies can snag pics! It was just so weird to see myself on a random Instagram!
I’ve also heard 80% diet, 10% exercise, and 10% genetics and I agree!!!
Manicmom says
So frustrating that a company would take your photos. I do hope you contact them. You’re looking fabulous, and I love those pictures with your treadmill in the play room. The mommy world. Haha!
Melanie says
I haven’t contacted the company yet, but I think I’m going to right now! It kind of freaks me out.
I know, the life of a mother is nuts!!! The treadmill amidst the crazy toys perfectly sums up my life. Ha!

That’s a little odd they just posted your picture without permission. I actually remember that post where your son took the photo.
My trainer told me when I’m crunched for time, or want to do cardio that HIIT is the best type of workout. I love those circuits. I’m sure it’s a challenge.
It is definitely end of the year class trip and celebration time.

I know, the random pic on Instagram is sooooooo weird to me???
I loooooove HIIT workouts! I love that they are so hard and effective, but so quick too. 😉

Wow, so weird that a company used your picture without telling you or at least crediting you. That is strange.
Melanie says
I know!!! It was just so weird to see myself randomly on another Instagram feed. It’s also strange that it’s a local company??? Soooo weird?

I like to work out from home sometimes but most of the time I prefer being outside or at the gym with people. We live in an apartment so its quite small and limits my options.
I would have been so mad if someone used my picture in marketing. Isn’t that against the law ? I would have called them and asked immediately that they remove it.
Melanie says
I know, I looooove working out at the gym and I looooooove running outside! It is so energizing and rejuvenating to me! I know, that random picture of me showing up on Instagram was so strange????

Melanie you are doing great with the work outs! You give me motivation girl! I think for now, I rather work out from home then go to the gym. It’s more convenient for me? I love the zoo and I’m planning on taking my kids very soon.
Melanie says
Thanks so much Ros Emely! I much prefer to workout at the gym, but you can’t beat the convenience, flexibility and price of working out from home!
