Happy 2015 everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day!
We spent New Year’s Eve up at my parent’s house. My mom throws a “mean party” every year with a bunch of my aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings. It’s a lot of fun!
There’s always a lot of good food and we usually watch some sort of “old pictures” slideshow. We also like to bring in the New Year a couple hours earlier, along with the East Coast of the country, lol.
Just before everyone leaves, we sing Auld Lang Syne (sadly, we couldn’t fit everyone in this picture!)
Yes, it’s a pretty typical “old folks” New Year’s Eve party, but I love it so much….and I love all the “old and young folks” that are there! In fact, I’m quickly becoming one of the “old folks!”
I love traditions and I love my family.
Oh, and I totally forgot that I bought this cute shirt for my sweet baby!
Soooo, he wore it all day on January 2nd! #MommyFail
I love that little cutie so so much!

Well, I’m excited to start Whole 30 on Monday! I’ve been very busy getting ready for it. I ran to Costco and Harmons (local health food store) yesterday and loaded up!
Kev met me at Costco after work and I laughed because I kept filling my cart full of healthy stuff and he and my boys kept filling their cart up with “not so healthy” stuff, lol!
The boys kept saying “I love it when dad comes shopping with us!”
In Kev’s defense, we had family staying with us this weekend, so the muffins were mostly for them. 😉 Oh, and Kev also reminded me that I shouldn’t take him shopping when he’s starving. Hee hee.
Here are some of the things I got…
Pineapple, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, sugar snap peas, spinach, spaghetti squash, cauliflower, lettuce, eggs, egg whites, apples and blueberries!
I already had tuna, chicken and deli meat at home in the fridge/freezer.
I found a few random things at Harmon’s that I couldn’t get at Costco…
I got some tomatillo salsa, Cholula, Cilantro Lime Dressing, Fig & Walnut Balsamic dressing and Ghee (clarified butter.) I’m afraid veggies and meat might get old very fast, so I wanted to get a few things to add some flavor!
Yum! The two dressings were quite expensive (around $6-7 each!), but I figure they will both last a long time. I made sure to check the ingredients on both of them to make sure they were “Whole 30 legal.” They were both Canola oil based, which isn’t ideal, but it’s okay.
I may end up making some of my own dressings too, but I just wanted to have some quick and easy stuff on hand as well.
I’m planning on doing a bunch of “food prep” tomorrow. I’ll probably cook up some ground turkey with spices and onions, grill some chicken and chop up a bunch of veggies! I definitely want to set myself up for success! I AM going to make it through the entire 30 days. Quitting is not an option for me!
Heck, it’s ONLY 30 days.
Oh, and because it’s only 30 days, I’m not expecting mega huge results! My goal is to “reset” my metabolism and detox from all of the “holiday issues” I had. I’m also hoping to lose a little weight (5-8 pounds.) We’ll see.
I actually don’t think it will be as hard as I originally thought. I’m so happy that fruit is allowed and was happy to see that all types of potatoes are allowed too! I don’t plan on eating a ton of potatoes, but it’s nice to have them as a “comfort food” option.
I plan to make the bulk of my diet veggies and lean meats. I will use fruits, potatoes, nuts and seeds to “spice up” the diet and keep me from getting too sick of meats and veggies!
Oh, I also bought THIS to help keep me motivated and keep track of my success…
It’s just a cheap little calendar I picked up at Walmart. I’ve told you guys in the past that I’m very motivated by notebooks! I love to physically write down my goals and progress. I’m going to keep track of my diet, exercise, sleep and water consumption. I usually like to keep track of my weight loss (or lack thereof) too, but I’m not supposed to weigh or measure myself while doing Whole 30!
*************************
A lot of you have expressed interest in doing this with me! I would be thrilled to have any and ALL of you do it with me. We can help to keep each other accountable! I’m going to try to post on the blog regularly about my progress/thoughts/ideas, etc. I will also be posting pics on my Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram, so you can follow me at any of those places if you like.
I also decided to create a hashtag so you can all find info about my Whole 30 adventure easily. I will be using the hashtag #HBH30, so if any of you want to do this challenge with me, you can use that hashtag as well so I can see how/what y’all are doing too! Sound good???
I also want to say that if any of you are thinking about doing this “diet,” (or any other healthy diet for that matter!) but are feeling chicken, worried, apprehensive, intimidated……JUST DO IT! It’s only 30 days, it’s only food, but it does have the potential to change your life. I love trying new “diets.” Sometimes I am successful, sometimes I totally crash and burn, but I ALWAYS learn so much about myself and never regret the experience.
Well, that’s all folks! Have a great night. xoxo

PLANNERS ARE MY LIFE! Without my planner I am 20000000% lost! And I am soooo picky when it comes to picking one out, LOL!!! Amazon wasn’t selling the EXACT one I wanted so I got all Huffy! LMFAO! I found it on eBay! 😉
Melanie says
I’m a “picky planner” person too! Ha ha. I’m glad you found the planner you were looking for! I am always so grateful to be able to shop online!

I did this last year trying to see if gluten and dairy affected my energy level because I was so sleepy all the time. I did not see a huge difference but found that dairy and gluten bloat me up big time. Good luck. I had to make my own ketchup and mayo
Melanie says
I’m sorry you we’re so sleepy all the time Kelly! That would be the worst. That’s interesting that dairy and gluten made you bloat too. I have definitely noticed that gluten makes me bloat, but haven’t noticed it with dairy. I will try to pay closer attention when I add it back in. I love doing diets/detoxes like this because it’s always interesting to see how the body reacts to different types of food!
I was thinking about making my own Mayo, but I know of a brand that is *almost* Whole 30 worthy…I may just use it anyway. I need to check my ketchup label too.
Kelly says
Then someone told me you can find almost all of it at while foods.

Looks like you had a wonderful holiday. Family is so important.
I haven’t done the Whole 30 but did 21 Day Sugar Detox a couple times. Loved it, it completely reset my metabolism and I always felt so much better afterwards. Good luck !
Melanie says
The 21 day Sugar Detox sounds great! Sugar is always my biggest vice. I’m really hoping to reset my metabolism and feel great with Whole 30. 😉
MCM Mama (@mcmmama) says
I lasted about 6 days on the Whole 30. I’m sure if I could stick it out longer, it would be good, but I turn into a real witch without enough carbs and my running was awful. I’ve decided to try to stay close to it, but add in the things my body seems to need for running.
Melanie says
Oh, I hear ya about the running! Whenever I’ve done a low carb diet, I CAN NOT run or do any type of cardio. I always feel so weird. I’m hoping since this diet allows fruit and potatoes that I won’t feel quite so weird. We’ll see…fingers crossed!
Manicmom says
I think I could avoid the grains and legumes because of all the food allergies around here, and I know I need to give up the sugar, but the dairy brings me up short. No cheese? That makes me weep a little. When my girlfriend and I were in college she used to say she was a “vegetarian except for hamburgers,” which I guess is the same for me – Paleo except for the cheese.
I’ll be excited to see how this goes for you. Good luck!
Melanie says
LOL! I love cheese too! It definitely adds so much flavor and excitement to foods. 🙁 I know I’m going to really miss the sugar, but sugar is probably the most important one to avoid! It’s always interesting to me how much I don’t miss it after it’s been out of my system for a few weeks though.

Your New Year party looks and sounds like so much fun! I’m not one to go out and party, but you’ve inspired me to throw a family party next year like your mom does. I’m already getting excited about it!
Good luck with #HBH30!
Melanie says
We really did have so much fun at my mom’s house. She’s been throwing that party every year for most of my life. I hope you have a fun family party next year!!!

My coworker did Whole 30 last month and had AMAZING results. She stuck to it 100%, and her and her husband are now doing a Whole 90!! I made a Costco run today and had NO temptations to buy anything other than all my favorite whole foods!! This year is already off to a great start! 🙂
Melanie says
Oh I’m so happy to hear your coworker had such great results!! I’m really hoping to notice some major differences. I’m impressed they’re starting Whole 90 too!!! Awesome. I’m also impressed you made it out of Costco with no temptations. That’s a major feat, lol!
Kim says
I know that you will do great on your Whole 30!!!
I’m not going to join in but will definitely cheer you on and support you as much as I can virtually!
Melanie says
Thanks so much Kim! You are always so supportive, encouraging and inspiring to me!
BackatSquare0 (@BackAtSquare0) says
Hope the Whole 30 goes well. I am doing a 21 day reset with my running coach starting Monday too.
Melanie says
Thanks so much! The 21 day reset sounds great, especially with a coach! Good luck!

Can’t wait to read about your results. The whole 30 seems realistic so you won’t get hungry. I love Carson’s New year shirt. Do they have them in my size. Haha!
Melanie says
Yes, Whole 30 seems very realistic to me too. I’m hoping to feel great! I’d love to find a shirt like Carson’s too, lol!!!
MCM Mama (@mcmmama) says
Preparation is definitely key for following the whole 30. Looks like you have everything you need. Good luck!
Melanie says
Thanks so much! Yes, I know I’m going to have to embrace “food prep” over the next month. Ha.
courtney says
Just started my first whole 30 today and we are doing it as a family, including my 1 and 3 year olds. They will obviously have some things like milk and rice but they were more than ready to toss the sugar. My son emptied out the freezer with no mercy tossing popsicles, ice cream and fudgesicles no problem! Good luck and I look forward to watching your progress.
Melanie says
Yay! I’m so happy you’ve started Whole 30 too and I’m SO IMPRESSED your entire family is doing it too….and with gusto! That is amazing. My husband is doing his own version with me, but none of my kiddos wanted to do it, dang it. However, whenever I clean up my diet, their diets naturally clean up too, whether they like it or not. Ha. I wish you all the best with your Whole 30!
FitBritt@MyOwnBalance says
Good luck with the Whole 30! I’m sure you’ll do great. I really need to clean up my diet. How do you food prep with the little one? I haven’t been able to manage yet.
Melanie says
Thanks so much! Food prep is tough with a baby! Sometimes he’s content in his swing or bouncy chair, sometimes my husband or big kids play with him/hold him and sometimes he’s just fussy and I have to wait until later. I will say that my baby is significantly easier than he was as a newborn or even as a 2-3 month old. He’s able to see things more clearly and bat at toys. He is also fascinated by his hands and will be busy looking at them for a while, lol. It will get so much easier as your baby grows!
