Well, I was in the middle of typing up this post last night when my 10 year old son came running in the house screaming, “I think I broke my arm!”
This particular son of mine is very dramatic, so I wasn’t too worried initially. However, as soon as I saw his arm I thought, “Yep, it’s broken.” It was bent in a way that arms just aren’t supposed to bend. Eeee.
Soooo, Kev and I ran him to the Instacare and they sent us to the ER. They let us know he broke his radius and ulna bones all the way through and they were both displaced. Here’s one of his x-ray pictures where you can see the broken bone and the odd shape of his wrist.
Poor guy. He was in a lot of pain, but the orthopedic doctor who was on call was amazing! The nurses told us that most doctors would probably opt for surgery to fix this break, but the doc we had was the “best.”
They put my son to sleep while they set his arm (thank heavens!) I didn’t watch them set it, but Kev did and he said it was terrible. The doctor literally yanked and manipulated his arm until he was able to line up the bones correctly. Yikes.
My poor baby is doing much better now and is enjoying all of the attention.
Oh, and FYI, he was just playing in the backyard with a bunch of kids. They had some old stools and a snow sled out there and were climbing on them. My son was on one of the stools and fell off and caught himself with his arm.
It wasn’t pretty.
He’s our first child to break a bone. He was also our first child to get stitches too. He is VERY active and adventurous. In fact, I’m surprised he’s made it this long without a broken bone!
I’m so grateful he’s okay and I’m so grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses who helped us.
I swear, there is ALWAYS some type of drama happening at our house at all times.
**************************
We had a very nice, relaxing, enjoyable weekend. I loved it. However, it was a little bit “reckless abandon-ish” as far as my healthy lifestyle goes.
It was very nice though.
For some reason, I have been SO TIRED lately! I’ve been getting plenty of sleep, but have been seriously draggin’. I guess it takes a lot of energy to grow a human being. 😉
However, it’s amazing how quickly my “healthy living mojo” goes down the tubes when I’m tired. Soooo, I pretty much just ate whatever sounded good to me and it was very nice.
I totally made these cupcakes on Sunday night and they were FABulous!!!!
I just used a regular cake mix, but the frosting was crazy good! Here’s a link to the recipe. Holy crap guys, that frosting is the bomb. We may just have to make cupcakes again….very very soon!
On Saturday Kev and I went to dinner at Sweet Tomatoes (also known at Souplantation in other areas.)
I was invited to be a part of their “Design Your Own Delicious” campaign and share my favorite creations/choices with all of you!
I was happy to oblige.
I love the salad bar at Sweet Tomatoes and always load up!
I don’t remember every single thing I threw on there, but my favorites were the hard boiled egg, sunflower seeds and raisins. Seriously SO GOOD! I always love to get a little bit of their broccoli salad too.
I also had a slice (or two!) of their AMAZING sourdough bread topped with honey butter.
GUYS, this bread is unbelievably good, especially when it’s hot out of the oven! I also had a small blueberry muffin and a taste of their fettuccine Alfredo, but didn’t take a pic.
I ended this wonderful dinner with a small ice cream sundae…
I topped my ice cream with hot fudge, cookie crumbs and toffee pieces. Yuuuuummmmm!
I love Sweet Tomatoes and even though they offer a lot more healthy options than your typical buffet restaurant, I always eat way too much!
I enjoyed every bite though.
After dinner, Kev and I went to see the new X-Men movie and it was really good!
I’m not usually a fan of sci-fi superhero movies, but I really liked this one! The story line wasn’t predictable and kept me interested the whole time. I also really, really love Hugh Jackman!
I thought Jennifer Lawrence did a great job as the blue lady (Mystique) too. I would HATE to wear that costume though! Can you imagine???? Ya, you’re pretty much naked with blue paint on. Cute.
Anyway, we had a fun night!
I’ve also been trying to eat extra well the past couple days to make up for my crazy weekend. It’s been great. I had this for breakfast today and yesterday…
1 egg + 3 egg whites scrambled with onions, peppers and spinach and topped with tomatoes and guacamole.
Seriously SO GOOD!
It doesn’t keep me full for too long though. 🙁
I had a bunch of leftovers for lunch yesterday…
Grilled chicken, sweet potato and a yummy salad topped with more guacamole!
Yes, I think guacamole will be a staple around our house this summer. I’ll share my recipe with you guys soon!
For dinner last night, I made this…
Yes, it’s pretty much my “I don’t know what in the heck to make for dinner, so I’ll make this for dinner” dinner. I cooked up some chicken (seasoned with seasoning salt) in my electric frying pan and served it with broccoli, quinoa (the kids didn’t eat the quinoa though) and tortellini (I only ate a few) topped with marinara sauce.
I must say that this is my favorite marinara sauce hands down…
It’s from Costco, obviously, but it is so dang good and full of real ingredients!
I think it tastes just like the marinara sauce at Olive Garden. YUM! I even like it better than the homemade sauce I canned last year. I don’t think I’ll be canning sauce any more!
Oh, and I had this for a snack yesterday…
Protein pudding (love!) topped with bananas, chocolate chips and sliced almonds. I LOVE this snack/treat!
I had this for lunch today….
A nectarine and an apricot topped with cottage cheese. LOVE THIS, but it doesn’t keep me full for long either. I might just have to make some protein pudding again. 😉
Oh, and my cute broken-armed son keeps asking me to make a treat (yes, he’s milking the attention!) I may just have to be a good mom and accommodate him, dang it. 😉
Well, I gotta go pick my kidlets up from school and then I’m going to get my hair done (hallelujah!) Oh, and here’s my official “29 weeks pregnant” pictures…
I can’t believe I’ll be 30 weeks soon. YAY!
Well, I hope you all have a wonderful night!
Kim says
Oh, no – no fun about your son!! Our youngest broke his arm in a similar way 2 years ago – surgery to set – full cast (past the elbow) for 3-4 weeks, then a smaller cast for another 3-4 weeks – thankfully his was at the end of summer – bummer that this happened at the beginning of summer.
And, you still look super cute!
Melanie says
Your son’s incident sounds just like mine, except somehow we avoided surgery. Yay! He’s so bummed it’s the beginning of summer! He wants to swim, run around, ride his bike, etc. It’s killing him. He’ll get his short cast on in a few weeks and I hope it will be easier then. 😉
PNWRunner says
Ahh, I am so sorry to hear about your son. I’ve never broken a bone (knock on wood) so I wouldn’t know what it feels like, especially being a mom and witnessing it. Your pictures are making me hungry!!
Melanie says
Thanks! I haven’t broken a bone either, but it looked SO PAINFUL on my son. Ouch!
GiGi Eats Celebrities says
OMG your son’s wrist!!!!! GAHHHHH!! I have been there 4 times before!!!!
And I LOVED XMEN – my old roommate was the 2nd AD (Assistant Director!)!!
I have always wanted to try a Sweet Tomatoes – is this a solely vegetarian restaurant though??
Melanie says
4 times!!?? Yikes! That’s so cool your old roommate was invovled with XMEN. Loved that movie! Sweet Tomatoes is wonderful and it’s not just vegetarian. They have tons of yummy salad toppings and soups with protein too. YUM!

I hope your son gets better soon! When my brother was 4 years old, he jumped off a couch (thinking he was going to fly like Superman) and landed on his arm. Boys are so active and adventurous! He was stuck with a sling for a while because of his “Superman” incident and never jumped off the couch again!
I love those dishes with guacamole! Looks delicious!
Melanie says
Your poor brother! I love the Superman story though…too funny!
The Vegan 8 says
You still look sooo small girl!! Seriously! Oh man, your poor son…that must have hurt…poor baby 🙁
But what really got my attention, shocker I know, is those cupcakes! Cupcakes are probably my favorite indulgence. I clicked the link and I used to make a frosting exactly like that one with the cream cheese and people always died over it! In fact, when I was pregnant with my daughter, for my baby shower I made vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, then a year later we went vegan for health reasons. Anyways, I remember how yummy they were…thank God I have been able to recreate that yummy “cream cheese” flavor again. Those salads look soooo good too.
Melanie says
I know, cupcakes are one of my favorite treats too! They’re dangerous. I’m sure we’ll make them again soon. You are SO amazing and I can’t believe (actually, I can!) that you were able to make your own version of cream cheese frosting.
Jessica says
Your poor boy! That looked like a nasty break! I hope he’s feeling better.
I”m pretty sure 30 weeks pregnant = tired no matter what. I hope you’re sleeping well at night, that’s always the worst when sleep gets difficult and you still have to function during the day.
Melanie says
Ya, it was pretty painful for him, but he’s doing much better now. Thankfully, I’ve been sleeping pretty well, but it is tough to get (and stay!) comfortable. I’m seriously counting down the days….
JenB says
Ouch on the broken arm! We’ve had two of that type (where it’s SO obviously broken) … the first time I took my boy to the instacare too. They took one look and said “Off to Primary Children’s Hospital” as it needed to be set under sedation and x-ray. When it happened to my younger son, I knew exactly what would happen as we’d already been through it. Those breaks are much more dramatic, we’ve had a few of the “hmmm, lets wait and see how you are feeling in an hour” ones too (I have FIVE active boys). It is so wonderful to live in a day and age where medical technology can fix our children!
Melanie says
Wow, it sounds like your boys keep you busy! Once my baby arrives, I’ll have 5 boys too. I’m really surprised this is our first broken bone with this many boys running around! We thought we’d have to run our son to Primary Children’s too, but were SO HAPPY the doctor on call could do it. YAY!
FitBritt@MyOwnBalance says
You look so great!!
I’m so sorry about your son! I hope he feels better soon. I fractured my elbow last summer when I feel off my bike and it was no fun!
I know what you mean about feeling tired. I can’t seem to drag myself out of bed in the morning. I used to get up no problem!
Melanie says
Thanks so much! Ouch, a fractured elbow sounds painful! I can’t wait until my energy returns…some day! I know I’ll be tired for several months after baby is here too. Little babies are SO MUCH fun though!
PassTheKnife says
So sorry to hear about your son’s injury! Lots of vitamin C and Calcium! Hope he is on the mend soon!
Melanie says
Thanks so much! I never thought about giving him more Vitamin C and Calcium…good idea!
Lauren says
Wow – I totally can’t believe you’re almost 30 weeks – that’s crazy to me! I swear it goes by so quick watching other bloggers through a pregnancy – haha! Food all looks good and once in a while a slip is ok. I’m loving your bump!!
Melanie says
I know pregnancies always go so much quicker for the ones who aren’t pregnant. This pregnancy has seemed like FOREVER, but I’m grateful I can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s been tough not to be as active and energetic as I usually am….but I know it’s worth it!
ddshelby says
Poor kid! I’m glad he is okay.Luckily neither of mine have ever broken a bone!
I am not normally a fan of Superheroes, but you are making me want to see this X-men flick.
You look great, and I’m amazed you are only just now really seeming to sport a baby bump! Adorable!
Melanie says
I’ve never broken a bone either and he’s our first child to break one. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that my other kid’s bones will stay intact! Thanks so much for your sweet words and support, as always!
bezzymates says
Glad to see your son is okay. Is he the athletic son who exercises with you? Hope he heals soon. Those cupcakes look decadently delicious. Yumm!
Melanie says
Yes, my poor son is the one who loves to be active and exercise with me. It’s killing him that he can’t do a lot of things he wants to do. He’ll get a shorter cast put on in about 2 1/2 weeks and then I think it will be much easier for him. 😉
BackatSquare0 (@BackAtSquare0) says
So sorry about your little guy.
And you look AMAZING in your pregnancy pictures, that dress is fabulous.
Melanie says
Thanks so much! I’ve really enjoyed Maxi dresses with this pregnancy. They look sort of dressy, but feel like sweats! Yay!
Brittany says
AHH I totally envisioned your son falling on his arm, and it made me CRINGE!! Poor guy! What a trooper though. I love Sweet Tomatoes, but we don’t have them in Washington. I would always go when I visit Arizona.
Melanie says
I know, my son’s arm looked so so painful. I love Sweet Tomatoes….maybe they’ll open one in Washington!
Kayla Tyburski says
Gosh you are so cute at 29 weeks! Your food looks so yummy…and newsflash… I’m not pregnant but craving like I am! I know how your son feels. I broke my arm two summers in a row. Jumping on a trampoline in the rain and jumping off a moving golf cart did not suit me well. My arm also had to be reset. OWWWWW!
Melanie says
Thanks so much! Ouch, both of your “arm breaking incidents” don’t sound like fun. I’ve never broken a bone, but my son’s looked so painful!
