My Son’s Cardiac Ablation

June 9, 201424 Comments

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  We had a fun and relaxing one,  but I will have to tell y’all about it tomorrow.

I’m actually at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City right now and will be here all day.  😉  My cute baby boy (10 year old) is having a Cardiac Ablation done to hopefully cure his heart arrhythmia (Wolfe-Parkinson-White Syndrome.)

D and I before his ablation

It’s a relatively low risk procedure, but they use catheters to go up inside his heart to “test” it and then use a laser to fix the problem.

Derek before his ablation

I’m trying to stay calm and not overthink everything (I’ve been known to do that!), but it makes me nervous to know they are messing with his heart.

It was also hard to say “goodbye” to him and leave him in the care of the doctors.  He was very scared and on the verge of tears.  🙁  I really wanted to break down and bawl myself,  but I had to be the “tough mom.”

I’m not very good at being tough.

Anyway, I’m expecting to be here all day.  The procedure takes 3-4 hours and they monitor him for 5-6 hours after that!  So I brought a lunchbox full of yummy healthy snacks.  I didn’t want to fall victim to whatever food is in the cafeteria. 🙂

Healthy snacks at the hospital

I brought Chobani yogurt, string cheese,  Babybel cheese, a peanut butter and honey sandwich, strawberries,  grapes,  and grilled chicken (yes,  I’m weird and like it cold.)

Yum!

I also brought a lot of good reading material with me…

Oxygen and Runner's World at the Hospital

My sister gave me a bunch of her old Oxygen and Runner’s World magazines.  I’m like a kid at Christmas.  😉

Well, I’ll keep y’all updated on his progress.  I hope everything goes smoothly.

I had a crazy week last week and indulged in too much sugar, but I plan to tighten up big time this week!  Have a great day!

Please don’t worry about the procedure, I have had it done and my life is SO much better since. I am a very active individual as well and this procedure improved my abilities to preform a hundred fold. So instead of worrying about what is about to happen to him, worry about keeping up with him when he’s up and running at 100%.

I’m a mother and now a grandmother and I know that when placed in these circumstances we have a tendency to have great concerns and for very valid reasons, but I find it helpful during such times to ponder on the blessings that such procedures are available for our children and at a much less evasive procedure than what it was 10 to 12 years ago. I was a child that suffered with this and it was no fun, especially because I loved sports and when my heart would go into arrhythmia I had to stop whatever I was doing and sit on the sideline. I had the procedure done at the age of 48 so I suffered with it for many years.

Wish him well for me and tell him to be excited about how well he is gong to feel once he has had a chance to mend a bit. ;-))

Thank you SOOOO much for your perspective! I’m so happy to hear from you and how it has changed your life. I’m so sorry you had to deal with it for so many years though. It’s so amazing what doctors and modern medicine can do. I’m so grateful. I’m also happy to say that after thoroughly testing my son’s heart yesterday, they determined his condition was very minor. He hasn’t experienced any symptoms in his life yet (the arrhythmia was discovered by chance), but they were worried he would have problems with it as he grew. Anyway, they found that his “extra pathway” wasn’t very impressive and they decided to not do the ablation. They will continue to monitor him through the years and I’m keeping my fingers crossed it won’t ever give him trouble! Thanks SOOOOO much for your comment. I found so much comfort it your words and experience.

Saying a prayer for you and your son. I can only imagine how nerve wracking that can be….! It is so cool that they can actually correct the problem. Modern medicine is truly amazing!

Thanks SOOOO much! I’m so happy to say that after the testing, they found his heart condition to be relatively minor and didn’t even end up doing the ablation. I was soooo happy, but it was still a long and scary day.

Fingers crossed that it all goes well. Even ‘standard’ procedures can be so stressful when it’s your baby involved, not to mention the pregnancy hormones added to the mix.
    🙁

Everything went great! Yes, it was so stressful, but I didn’t even consider the whole pregnancy hormone thing. I know that didn’t help, lol! It was a tough day, but I’m so glad it’s over and he’s doing wonderfully!

I’m so happy to say that everything turned out better than expected! I’m happy to have that day over with. It was so so tough to leave him in the care of the doctors. I definitely felt helpless, but knew he was in good hands.

I hope all is well with your son and all is calm with your family. I also want to say that you are fantastic. In the midst of everything you packed healthy choices for your hospital time. It is so hard to put health as a priority as a caregiver. You are a wonderful example for us all.
