The Best Breadsticks Ever…Seriously!

August 30, 20138 Comments

Happy Friday AND three day weekend to you all!

Yay!  I really love Fridays and holidays so much.

I hope you guys have some fun things planned for this weekend.  I’m planning on getting a bunch of stuff done around the house, spending some quality time with the kiddos (oh, and Kev), and getting a little bit of R&R.

Sounds awesome.

*****************

I got my 20 minute run in this morning.  I really love that run SO much!  It’s just so quick, yet challenging.  It’s also easy for me to get it done first thing in the morning because it’s only 20 minutes long!  When I run longer or further, it usually seems so daunting and I end up putting it off all day long.  20 minutes is just great.

I really love the entire exercise plan I’m following right now too.  LOVE IT!

Now, let’s just see if if produces the results I’m lookin’ for, huh?

I took my littlest kids to McDonalds for lunch today.  I ended up ordering the Grilled Chicken Bacon Ranch Salad and it was so good.

McDonalds Salad

I topped it with Newman’s Own Balsamic Vinaigrette and it was so yummy.  I was happy to see that this salad had only 230 calories, 10 carbs and 30 grams of protein.  Not too shabby.  The dressing was pretty great too…only 35 calories per serving.

Ya know, Mcdonalds is obviously not the epitome of health, but I’m pretty proud of them because they boldly list the calorie counts of each food item on their menu.  I think that’s pretty dang cool.

We had fun hanging out there too.

My and kiddos at McDonalds

Well, I have a couple ULTRA yummy, yet not healthy recipes I’ve been wanting to share with you guys.  I figured since it’s Friday, I will share one of them.

I try to eat well as much as I can, but I like to splurge sometimes too (especially on the weekend.)  However, I’ve learned to only splurge on things that are extremely awesome and worth it.  There are a lot of junk foods out there that I like, but I’ve tried to cut out the things I like and only enjoy the things I LOVE.

With that being said, I’m going to share my recipe for The Best Breadsticks Ever.  And, I’m really serious when I say they are the Best!  I made these breadsticks for my little sister while she was visiting last month.  She has since made them several times and she and her family think they are the best ever too!

I found this recipe on Pinterest a while ago, but sadly the website is no longer available.  Fortunately, I have a copy of the recipe.  FYI, I did add more flour (probably about 1/4 cup), but it’s probably because I’m at a higher elevation.

The Best Breadsticks Ever!

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups flour (add more flour if necessary)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • Parmesan cheese
  • garlic salt
  • parsley flakes

Combine water, yeast, and sugar in large bowl.  Allow to sit until yeast mixture is bubbly.

In medium bowl combine flour and salt.
Once yeast is bubbly, add dry ingredients and knead for 2 minutes (I used the dough hook on my Kitchen Aid mixer.)
**If dough is super sticky, add small amounts of flour until dough stops sticking to sides**

Breadstick dough
Cover bowl with clean dishcloth and let rise 20 minutes.

While dough is rising, preheat oven to 400°F.
Melt cube of butter and pour onto large cookie sheet (jelly roll pan.)
Sprinkle the melted butter with garlic salt and Parmesan cheese (I sprinkled the garlic salt evenly around the pan and the parmesan cheese liberally!)

Melted butter garlic salt and parsley for breadsticks
Roll the dough into a rectangle about the size of the cookie sheet (it doesn’t need to be perfect.)

Rolling out breadstick dough

Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into one inch wide strips.

Cutting breadstick dough

Take a strip of dough, fold it in half and twist it to form the bread stick.

Twisting breadsticks

Roll each bread stick around in the butter in the pan until completely covered.

Rolling Breadsticks in butter

Set the breadsticks in the pan, moving them around as necessary until each breadstick has been covered with the butter mixture.

Making breadsticks

Arrange the breadsticks in the pan and sprinkle tops with a little more garlic salt, Parmesan cheese and parsley.

Breadsticks precooked
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until they are lightly golden brown on top.

Breadsticks all done

These are SO dang good!

Yummy Breadsticks

They will be gone in about 10 seconds flat.

Enjoy…AND enjoy your weekend!

If I’m going to splurge, I want it to be worth it, too. Those bread sticks look worth it!

Oh my goodness! I made these tonight with our dinner, and they are every bit as good as you said they would be. My kids loved them. My three-year-old ate two huge ones (and she usually eats like a bird). Thanks- I’ll be making these again for sure.
